Community Stories: Urban Outreach Center NYC

Every couple of weeks, we highlight our community of users to showcase their amazing work and talk about how they are using Synergize Insights to advance transformational outcomes in their community. This week we are highlighting the Urban Outreach Center NYC.

What is your organization's mission?

The Urban Outreach Center’s mission is to create a space of justice-centered hospitality where homeless and low-income New Yorkers are empowered to access the necessities and connections they need to thrive.

What community do you serve?

While we serve nearly every zip code in NYC through food pantry, our vision is centered on East Harlem and the Upper East Side — as we seek to end the hunger gap in these two neighborhoods over the next two years

What are your immediate goals for 2020?

The Urban Outreach Center quickly pivoted this year to respond to the coronavirus pandemic — realizing a 150% increase in food-insecure guests served since March and distributing nearly 25,000 meals per month. Early predictions now place 1 in 4 New Yorkers as food-insecure as a direct result of COVID, so our immediate goals for 2020 are set on continuing to support the immediate and emerging needs of our communities with healthy food and other necessary basics, helping NYC families to stretch their monthly budgets, while working toward a broader vision of a hunger-free NYC, with justice-centered food systems.

We are able to turn $1 into 5 meals through our food pantry partners, so even a small recurring donation can make a big impact for the people that we serve!

Why do you use Synergize Insights?

We use Synergize Insights to gather actionable data around food insecurity and choice in East Harlem and the Upper East Side, as we expand our advocacy, policy, and program efforts to end the hunger gap in these neighborhoods.

How do you empower disinvested communities through your work every day?

Through providing healthy food, clothing, social services, and other resources, we help homeless and low-income New Yorkers — one family at a time, one bag of fruits and vegetables at a time — to stretch their budgets, protect their health, and expand their networks in an environment that prioritizes dignity, choice, and justice.

How can people support your organization's mission?

As we see dramatically increased demand in need for emergency food throughout NYC, our monthly donors are what help us continue to serve food-insecure New York families with dignity and hospitality. We are able to turn $1 into 5 meals through our food pantry partners, so even a small recurring donation can make a big impact for the people that we serve!
